چکیده

Flavonoids are a complex group of plant-made phenolic Background: compounds that are considered of high nutraceutical value. Their beneficial impacts on human health relate predominantly to their capacity to serve as antioxidants, thus protecting cells against the damaging impact of reactive oxygen species. Recent studies have also pointed at an essential role for flavonoids as antioxidants in plants. Here we show that the flavonoid quercetin, which is known to protect Results: human cells from oxidative stress, has the same effect on plant cells. Under oxidative stress conditions, Arabidopsis plants grown on quercetin-supplemented media grew better than controls and contained less oxidized proteins. This protection was also observed in the dicot Nicotiana and the aquatic monocot . tabacum Lemna gibba Quercetin can be used as a general antioxidant stress protectant Conclusion: for plants. Jan A. Berberine protects against glutamate-induced oxidative stress and apoptosis in PC12 and N2a cells

Objective(s): Neurodegenerative diseases have been associated with glutamatergic dysfunction. Berberine, an isoquinoline alkaloid broadly present in different medicinal herbs, has been reported to have neuroprotective effect. In the present study, the effects of berberine against glutamate-induced oxidative damage and apoptosis were investigated. Materials and Methods: The cultured PC12 and N2a...

Quercetin Protects DNA from Oxidative Damage in Diabetics

Quercetin Protects DNA from Oxidative Damage in Diabetics Diabetics have reduced antioxidant defenses and an increased risk for free-radical mediated conditions such as heart disease and retinopathy. Quercetin, a dietary flavonoid with antioxidant properties, has been shown to protect retinal pigment epithelial and cortical cells during oxidative stress in vitro1, and to inhibit tyrosine kinase...

Effects of quercetin on bisphenol A-induced mitochondrial toxicity in rat liver

Objective(s): Recognized as a distinguished environmental and global toxicant, Bisphenol A (BPA) affects the liver, which is a vital body organ, by the induction of oxidative stress. The present study was designed to investigate the protective effect of quercetin against BPA in hepatotoxicity in Wistar rats and also, the activity of mitochondrial enzymes were evaluated...

Quercetin reduces obesity-induced hepatosteatosis by enhancing mitochondrial oxidative metabolism via heme oxygenase-1

BACKGROUND Obesity-induced hepatic lipid accumulation causes lipotoxicity, mitochondrial dysfunction, oxidative stress, and insulin resistance, and is implicated in non-alcoholic hepatic pathologies such as steatohepatitis and fibrosis. Heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1), an important antioxidant enzyme catalyzing the rate-limiting step in heme degradation, protects against oxidative stress, inflammation,...

Quercetin Treatment Ameliorates Systemic Oxidative Stress in Cirrhotic Rats

Our aim was to investigate whether the antioxidant quercetin protects against liver injury and ameliorates the systemic oxidative stress in rats with common bile duct ligation. Secondary biliary cirrhosis was induced through 28 days of bile duct obstruction. Animals received quercetin (Q) after 14 days of obstruction. Groups of control (CO) and cirrhotic (CBDL) animals received a daily 50 mg/kg...
